Our Minister

Rev. Paul The Rev. Paul Beedle

Our minister arrived in New Orleans in August of 2013. He prepared for Unitarian Universalist ministry at Union Theological Seminary in New York following earlier work in retail, arts administration, and banking operations.

Paul was raised in the Presbyterian Church, and likes to say he was predestined to become a Unitarian Universalist. Having attended public schools in Cleveland OH (1-7) and St. Louis MO (K & 8-12), he earned a BA in Economics at Cornell University (1983) and an MBA at Washington University in St. Louis (1985) before entering working life. Throughout his school and college years he pursued his still-active interests in music, history, psychology and religion.

Paul returned to Cleveland as intern minister at West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church, co-supervised by Rev. Michael McGee (who was our minister in the 1980s) and Rev. Marjorie Skwire, and afterward did a residency as a chaplain at the St. Vincent Charity Hospital system. Ordained in 1999 by the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Huntington NY, where he was a member for 11 years, his first “solo gig” in ministry was as interim minister at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church in Sacramento CA. Subsequently he has served congregations in Riverside, Pasadena, and Goleta CA (where former church member the Rev. Erika Hewitt followed him as settled minister), and Stafford TX. Before coming to New Orleans, he also served as a hospital chaplain in greater Houston, and has completed training in spiritual direction through the FinD program of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas.

Rev. Beedle is especially interested in issues of economic and racial justice, and continues to learn from and network with New Orleanians who are involved in activism and organizing in these areas of concern.
