FROM OUR MINISTER: MELANIE'S MISCELLANY - "It's Carnival Time!" PDF Print E-mail
"It's Carnival Time!"

During the 14 years that I was away form New Orleans, ministering in other places, I often found myself with an inexplicable case of "the blues" around this time of year.  At first, I thought it was some kind of seasonal depression, caused by lack of sun light -- but it seemed the low-down sad feelings came even when there was lots of winter sun.  I got  to thinking about it, and talking about it with my son Stephen, and finally figured it out.  Where I was, it was just plain old winter, but back home in the Crescent City, it was Carnival.

Support Hatian Earthquake Relief PDF Print E-mail
Map of Haiti, Port au PrinceUUSC and the Unitarian Universalist Association have launched a joint earthquake relief fund to help the survivors of the major earthquake in Haiti.

UUSC’s disaster response in Haiti will focus on those survivors less likely to have access to aid, such as child domestic workers (restaviks), women-headed households that work in the informal sector, and people living with HIV/AIDS. Haiti has a vibrant grassroots movement with a vision of empowering people. UUSC will work closely with partners in this grassroots movement to reach those survivors at greatest risk of being overlooked. As of this afternoon, we’ve already connected with three organizations and will be reaching out to others over the next 24 hours in order to shape our response.

First UU Church will be taking a special offering on Sunday, February 7, 2010 for the joint UUSC and UUA earthquake relief fund.    Dr. Yvelyne Germain-McCarthy, member of First UU Church New Orleans and President of Haitian Association for Human Development (AHDH) , is also is soliciting your help for Haiti Relief -  http://www.haitiahdh.org

"We should not be shortsighted about only managing the effects of the earthquake and forget about the fact that six months or two years from now people will still need help."  ..  An suggested umbrella organization for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) is InterAction. - http://www.interaction.org/      Ky Luu, executive director of the Tulane Disaster Resilience Leadership Academy.
